This Is Our Story

We are Montsho & Nwasha Edu MHS’, DSKM, SW-WMW.  Together we are a happily married SoulMate team and co-founders of the Akoma House Initiative.  Our symbol of introduction is the “Akoma”(commonly called the “heart” today)… It is an ancient Afrakan symbol of Love, Patience, and Purpose.

We are the co creators of AKOMA DAY the 7 day Cultural Alternative to Valentine’s Day celebrated in 11 countries worldwide. We are the co-authors of two best selling books- Akoma Day: A Guidebook into the Sacred Science of SoulMating & Cultural Alternative to Valentine’s Day (2007) and You Are What You Cheat: A Guidebook into Understanding & Overcoming Infidelity (April 2014).

Our life experiences as husband & wife, business partners, parents, and best friends are what drive us to serve. We believe that “Love is Service”! Allow us to serve your intimate, family, personal and professional relationships.

Our personal journey is a living testimony to the veracity of our firm. Together we have overcome cultural mis-education, a long distance relationship, blended family dynamics, recurring unemployment, economic hardship, and the loss of a child. We almost didn’t make it through our first week of marriage!

Even as counselors ourselves, we spent the first year of marriage investing in coaching, seminars, and working with a therapist. We even got certified as Strategic Intervention Relationship coaches!  And although counseling was helping… we saw so many ways it could have been more effective.

What we learned through our cultural initiation is that symbolic language is the first language. When you can speak symbolically, you can speak to anyone.  Combining ritual, symbolic language and counseling strategies gave us rapid progress in our own conflicts.

We decided to use everything we had learned to co-create a love that could thrive through ANY challenge!

We know as counselors that there is a HUGE STIGMA in seeking professional help in our communities.

Many of us feel we don’t need help… and if we do, we must be weak…  We feel vulnerable that even the “counselor” will take the other person’s side.  So instead of getting the help that could resolve our issue, we suffer in our relationships with ourselves, our mates, our families and at work.

But The Truth Is… we all seek counseling everyday from our associates, friends, family and clergy…

Seeking out the wisdom of those who have excelled through your challenge is not only smart… it’s easy!  There has always been an idea of “wise counsel” in our communities.

That’s when we decided we wanted to help other couples!  We used what worked for us through our own relationship challenges with our friends and families.  Soon, we had friends of friends calling us to help them through their own relationship trials.

Heart Symbolism

What is the Akoma?

The Akoma (heart symbol) is an Adinkra symbol from Ghana, West Africa.  Adinkra symbology uses pictorial language to express folktales, philosophies,  morals and culture.  Unlike reading in English (decoding, pronouncing words and creating images in your mind), pictorial languages allow the “reader” to absorb both the subtle and profound interpretations of a symbol upon first sight.

The “heart” was a symbol for soul consciousness since ancient Egypt. In this classical African example, the heart of the deceased was weighed against a feather.  If the heart balanced against the feather (the principle of truth and justice), the deceased had lived a just life.  If the heart was heavy, (full of wrongdoings, ills, etc.) the balance would sink and the heart would be devoured by the beast Ammit.  This is the origin of the expression “Keep your heart as light as a feather”.

The “heart” image has been valued for thousands of years! This silver coin dates to 510 BC and was found in the excavation of the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene. The coin’s design is one of the few surviving images of a seed pod of the extinct Silphium plant. The plant had many medicinal uses, including being used as an herbal contraceptive and sensual stimulant.

{SOULMATES} start as “ONE BEING” in the Spiritual Realm. At the exact moment of physical conception “IT” separates into the womb of two different woman (sometimes at different locations & times (yrs.apart etc). Their individual purposes are “Spiritually Divined” by “Sacred Interpreters”. At birth both male & female are “welcomed”. Their respective INITIATIONS begin as they are taught “COMPLETE UNIVERSAL KNOWLEDGE”.  Simultaneously they are prepared for each other usually meeting for the first time as children.  Finally, they mature, “REUNITE & MATE” to share their SOULS &UNIFIED PURPOSE with each other and the world.  Our logo was created by Montsho Edu to illustrate this understanding.  NYA AKOMA (take heart)!
