We all have heard that “Patience is a Virtue”. Regular use and time have made the word appear cliché to many.
However, there is such a profound cultural wisdom in these words that can be difficult to absorb emotionally especially here in the west. Key tenants of patience are understanding, tolerance, and acceptance of things that are contrary to our current desire or understanding. Patience is really the “big boy/girl” virtue; meaning that it is very challenging to embody emotionally.
Next to forgiveness, patience requires the most selflessness. We all need to demonstrate more patience; and we know it. Whether it is with our children, family, friends or lovers. Don’t trip though… because patience and stagnation ain’t the same!
Patience has a deliberateness to it that can only be fueled by LOVE! Whether it’s for a person, place or thing or simply our love of self that allows us to calmly wait with dignity to counter harmful energy with crushing force and power!
Our ancestors used the symbol and Myth of the African Turtle as one of the many signs for understanding patience . Not just because it moves deliberately slow, or is extremely old and wise but rather because the tortoise represents the characteristic of “EGOLESSNESS”. The act of humbly tucking the turtle’s head out of sight represents symbolic surrender of the “ego head”. You see the turtle understands that the easiest way to serve is to get out of the way and allow for the process of others to manifest. That’s deliberate, wise and a selfless strength that we all should aspire to.
